Static is a broadband sound, which means many frequencies at once instead of one tone. Tinnitus that sounds like static is common, and the description is accurate. Two variants behave differently and are worth telling apart.
I spent years working with the actual thing. Analog noise floors, hiss from a preamp pushed too far, the specific texture of a badly shielded cable. So when people describe their tinnitus as static, I know exactly what they are reaching for.
The description is worth taking at face value, because it tells you something a ringing description does not.
Why does my tinnitus sound like static instead of ringing?
A ringing tinnitus is tonal: energy concentrated at one frequency, like a note.
Static is broadband: energy spread across a wide range at once. If you have ever heard an untuned radio or a television with no signal, that is what your ear is reporting.
That distinction matters for one practical reason. Masking a tone is easy, because you only need to cover one frequency. Masking broadband noise is harder, because it occupies the same wide range that any masking sound would use.
People with static-type tinnitus often report that sound machines help less, and there is a reason for that. It is not you doing it wrong.
Is it my hearing aid, wax, or electrical interference?
A few things static is commonly mistaken for, worth clearing away.
It is not a problem with your hearing aid or earbuds, if it continues when they are out. Try that first, because it is the easiest thing to rule out.
It is not usually wax, although wax occlusion can change what you hear. A clinician can see that in about a minute, and it is one of the few genuinely fixable causes.
It is not electrical interference, even though it sounds exactly like it. A sound that persists in a field, in a car, and in a basement is not coming from wiring.
When is static in my ear worth getting checked?
Static that pulses with your heartbeat. Take your pulse while listening. If they match, that is pulsatile tinnitus, which has a different set of possible causes and its own workup. Say so at an appointment.
Static that appeared suddenly in one ear, especially with any change in hearing or any dizziness. Sudden one-sided changes are the situation where getting seen quickly actually matters, rather than being general advice.
Everything else in this article is about the ordinary, both-ears, gradual version.
Why does the static get louder when the room is quiet?
Same reason as every other kind, and it applies with particular force here.
When input drops, the auditory system raises its own gain. Raise the gain on any system with nothing coming in and you amplify its noise floor. With broadband tinnitus, what gets amplified already sounds like a noise floor, which is why people describe the effect as the static “swelling” rather than the tone “coming forward.”
What can I do about the static?
- Take the earbuds out and listen. Rule out the device before anything else.
- Get wax checked if you have never had it looked at. It is quick, it is common, and it is one of the few things with a direct fix.
- Try a slightly narrower masking sound, such as rain or a fan, rather than white noise. Matching broadband with broadband often just adds.
- Describe it as broadband, or say “like an untuned radio” rather than “ringing”, because the two send different signals to a clinician.
FAQ
Is static-type tinnitus worse than ringing?
Not inherently. It is often harder to mask, which some people find more intrusive, but it does not indicate a worse underlying situation.
Will it go away?
For some people it does, particularly soon after it starts. Nobody can predict an individual case, and anyone who promises an outcome is guessing.
Why does mine change texture through the day?
Fluctuation is normal in this condition and is covered separately. Texture changing is within the range of ordinary variation.
Could it be a medication?
Some medications are associated with tinnitus. That is a question for a pharmacist or the prescriber, with your actual list in front of them.
I hear it more in one ear. Does that matter?
Worth mentioning. Asymmetry is a reason for someone to look rather than a reason to worry on your own.
Does static mean nerve damage?
No. The character of the sound does not establish a cause, and anyone reading a diagnosis off a description is overreaching.
